Shiatsu

A Japanese Body Therapy

Shiatsu, Shi (meaning finger) and astu (meaning pressure) is a traditional Japanese body therapy  that applies the use of, thumbs, palms, elbows and feet to invigorate, nourish and support a balance in energy flow throughout the body.

When there is an area of the body mind or spirit that is in stress the body may then reflect this physically, emotionally or nutritionally.

It is not uncommon for example for someone to come in for headaches as their presenting symptom only to discover the underlying condition related to another area such as the digestive system.

Our practitioners engage the client’s use of breath, the meridian system and stretches so they can feel, observe and release their patterns of tension and imbalance. Some treatments may also include the use of moxa, non invasive needling and cupping to further encourage energy flow.  Treatments are very fluid and engaging, supporting the client’s innate ability to re-establish a connection to themselves, feel nourished, calm and renewed.

Each treatment is individually accessed for that day, season and presenting condition. Diagnosis is supported by using the Traditional Chinese medicine practice of tongue diagnosis and pulse reading, questioning, observation and palpation.

Shiatsu treatments apply the use of:

  • Palming, thumb or foot pressure, integrated with flowing stretches to engage the movement of energy along the meridian pathways.
  • Moxabustion (a warm activating herb) to support and nourish the body on a deep level.
  • Cupping to relieve tension and improve mobility,
  • Manaka Protocols (a gentle needling technique) to promote the free flow of energy throughout the whole body.
  • Bush flower essences to provide clarity, support and understanding around emotional issues and stress.

Shiatsu is beneficial for:  back pain, sciatica, muscular pain, headaches, migraines, fatigue, menstrual problems, circulation issues, insomnia, depression, emotional  stress and anxiety, allergies, asthma.
